The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 advocates a holistic, learner-centered, and multidisciplinary approach to education that emphasizes sustainability, environmental awareness, and the overall development of students. Within this framework, the concept of green campuses has emerged as an effective strategy for transforming school environments into dynamic spaces that support both academic excellence and ecological responsibility. This study examines the role of green campus initiatives in enhancing educational quality and promoting sustainable development in schools. It explores various environmentally sustainable practices, including tree plantation, rainwater harvesting, solid waste management, renewable energy utilization, biodiversity conservation, school gardening, and eco-club activities, and analyzes their impact on students’ learning experiences and academic outcomes.
The study adopts a qualitative and policy-oriented approach to investigate how environmentally enriched school environments contribute to students’ cognitive, emotional, social, and behavioral development. Green campuses provide opportunities for experiential and project-based learning, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-life environmental challenges. The findings indicate that schools implementing sustainable practices experience improved student engagement, increased attendance, enhanced academic performance, and stronger environmental stewardship among learners. Furthermore, such initiatives encourage community participation, foster responsible citizenship, and create a culture of sustainability within and beyond the school premises.
The research highlights the close alignment between green campus development and the objectives of NEP 2020, particularly its emphasis on experiential learning, environmental education, sustainable development, and holistic growth. The study concludes that integrating eco-friendly infrastructure with innovative educational practices can significantly contribute to the transformation of schools into sustainable learning communities. Green campuses not only enhance academic excellence but also prepare students to become environmentally conscious and socially responsible citizens capable of addressing future global challenges.
